General FAQs

Do you provide post-exposure rabies vacccinations?



No, unfortunately we are unable to provide rabies vaccinations if you have been exposed to potential rabies virus as it usually requires rabies immune globulin (HRIG). We only provide pre-exposure rabies vaccines (preventative vaccines). We do not provide post-exposure rabies vaccinations under any circumstances. Please visit urgent care, hospital emergency or contact your cities public health unit.

I require a document to be signed to verify vaccinations I received, do you provide this service?



Yes! If you need vaccination forms signed by our healthcare professional, a fee will apply. Please be aware that we can only authenticate and sign forms for vaccinations administered by TravelVAX. Unfortunately, we are unable to verify vaccinations from outside sources. Additionally, our physician can also provide authentication and signature upon request at an additional fee. Feel free to ask about this service during your appointment.

Are travel vaccines covered by my health insurance?



Some travel vaccines may be covered by health insurance, while others may not. It is recommended to check with your insurance provider for specific information on coverage for vaccines.

I know which vaccines I want; Do I need a Travel Consultation?



No Travel Consultation needed! You can book your vaccine appointment online at one of our travel clinics.

Please note we are unable to provide vaccine recommendations or travel medicines on-site. Please book a virtual travel consultation if you are unsure of the vaccines or require travel medications for your trip.

What vaccines do I need?



To recommend which vaccines are required, this all depends on your past vaccination history, itinerary, trip duration, etc. This is covered during our Travel Consultation with one of our travel specialists who will assess and recommend which vaccines are required for your trip. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any recommendations over the phone, email or chat due to the uniqueness of each trip.

I only want a prescription for my travel medicine. Can I get the prescription from TravelVAX?



Yes! You will need to book a Travel Consultation even if you know which medication(s) you require. This is to ensure we provide the correct advice for our doctor to assess and prescribe the medication. The travel consultation fee includes the doctor prescription fee. Please note our doctor is only able to prescribe for travel medicines.*Please note the fees outlined do not include the price of the vaccines or medications which are separate. Additional fees apply if a copy of prescription is requested.

Do you sell any other travel products e.g. bug sprays?



Yes! We have all the common travel health related supplies available for sale at our Travel clinics. We stock handy travel sizes for your convenience. Some products we carry: Imodium, Tylenol, bug sprays, electrolyte tablets, water purifying tablets, etc.

What services do you provide?



1. Travel Consultation

· Comprehensive travel health advice and recommendations for vaccinations and medications.

2. Vaccines/booster

· We provide vaccines for travel and routine immunizations; Either your first dose or any subsequent booster doses. This includes but not limited to: Hepatitis A, Dukoral, Typhoid Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Shingles, Gardasil (HPV), Tetanus (TdaP), etc.

3. Yellow Fever

· All our clinics are designated Yellow Fever vaccination centres.

4. TB skin testing

· We provide TB skin testing at select locations.

Do you charge an administration fee?



Yes, our administration fees are in line with other travel clinics and pharmacies for vaccination services.

$20 administration fee per visit

$10 each additional vaccine per visit

What if I know which vaccines I need?



If you know which vaccines you need and do not require any recommendations or medications, you can book directly online for vaccination at one of our clinics!

Is the Travel Consultation or vaccines/medications covered by MSP?



As this is for travel vaccinations and medications, it is considered a private consultation and MSP does not cover travel related appointments.

Some vaccines are covered under MSP as routine vaccinations. This includes, but not limited to:

MMR, Varicella, etc.

When can I book the in-clinic portion for the vaccines and medications?



You can book the appointment during business hours at least 2 days after the Travel Consultation. This allows our doctor to review the recommendations, medical history, allergies, etc from the Travel Consultation.

*Please note additional fees may apply for appointments less than 2 days of the Travel Consult.

Does the travel consultation include prescription medications?



Yes, our travel clinic is a one-stop clinic! The Travel Consultation fee includes the doctor’s fee for prescribing medications to TravelVAX Clinic. This can be upwards of $120 at a walk-in clinic or family practice as it is a private pay service and not covered under MSP. *Please note the fees outlined do not include the price of the vaccines or medications and administration fees for vaccines, which are separate. Additional fees apply if a copy of prescription is requested.

What does a Travel Consultation include?



That's a great question! A travel consultation includes a full consultation with our travel specialist. The travel specialist will tailor the vaccines and medications needed and recommend based on your travels with our up-to-date world database on diseases. This will also include a prescription for travel medication provided to TravelVAX Clinic which can cost upwards of $120 at a walk-in clinic or family practice. You can save anywhere from $50-100 compared to other travel clinics!

How do I book a Travel Consultation?



Please follow these 3 easy steps:

1. Intake Form

Book your Virtual Travel Consultation appointment and fill your intake form online.

2. Virtual Consultation

Consult with a Virtual Travel Specialist online (BOOK HERE) and receive all recommendations virtually.Once the virtual consultation is complete, choose one of our in-clinic locations to receive your travel vaccinations and travel medications. It's that easy!

In-clinic appointment must be at least 2 days after the Travel Consultation. This allows our doctor to review the recommendations, medical history, allergies and notes.*Please note additional fees may apply for appointments less than 2 days of the Travel Consult.

3. Visit One of Our Vaccination Centres

Receive your vaccinations and pick your travel prescription on the go at one of our Vaccination Centres.

How often do I need to get travel vaccines?



The frequency of travel vaccines depends on the specific vaccine and the length of time since the last dose. Some vaccines may require booster doses to maintain immunity. A travel medicine specialist can provide information on recommended schedules for each vaccine.

Can I still get travel vaccines if I am pregnant?



Do I need to bring anything to the appointment?



It is recommended to bring your immunization records, a list of any current medications or health conditions, and information on your travel itinerary.

How much do travel vaccines cost?



The cost of travel vaccines varies depending on the type of vaccine and the number of doses required. Some vaccines may be covered by insurance, while others may not. It is recommended to check with the travel vaccine clinic for specific information on cost.



Which vaccines do I need for my trip?



When should I get my travel vaccines?



It is recommended to schedule a consultation with a travel medicine specialist at least 4-6 weeks before your departure date to allow time for any necessary vaccinations to take effect. The minimum time for vaccinations before departure would be 2 weeks.

Why do I need travel vaccines?



Travel vaccines are essential to protect against diseases that are prevalent in certain regions of the world. Some countries may require proof of certain vaccinations before allowing entry.

What is a travel vaccine and medicine clinic?



A travel vaccine and medicine clinic is a specialized medical facility that provides vaccines and preventive health advice to individuals who are planning to travel to foreign countries or areas with a high risk of certain diseases.

TB Skin Testing

I have a form to be signed for TB, do you provide this service?



If you need to have a TB form signed apart from the Travelvax TB results form we provide, please bring it along to your TB reading appointment. Our Travelvax nurse will be happy to sign it during your appointment. If you need a TB form signed at any other time, a service charge will apply.

What happens if I have a positive result?



If you receive a positive TB skin test result, it’s crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to determine whether you have active TB disease. Treatment options are available for both latent TB infection (where the bacteria are present in the body but not causing symptoms) and active TB disease.

What do the results look like?



The results of the TB skin test are read between 48 and 72 hours after the injection. The test assesses the size of the raised, red bump (or induration) that appears at the injection site. A small or absent bump typically indicates no exposure to the TB bacterium.

Conversely, a large bump may suggest a past or present infection. However, a positive result does not necessarily mean you have active TB disease; additional testing, such as a chest X-ray or sputum test, is usually required to confirm the diagnosis.

Why do we have to do it?



TB skin testing is recommended for individuals at increased risk of exposure to the TB bacterium, such as those working in healthcare settings or traveling to countries with high rates of TB. It is also advised for those who have been in close contact with someone who has active TB.

What is the TB skin test?



The TB skin test is a simple and painless procedure that involves injecting a small amount of a substance called purified protein derivative (PPD) into the top layer of the skin on your forearm. This test is designed to detect whether your body has been exposed to the TB bacterium and to determine if you have an immune response that indicates a potential TB infection. It is used to help identify individuals who may need further evaluation or treatment.

What is Tuberculosis?



Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs but can also impact other parts of the body. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

At TravelVAX, we offer tuberculosis skin testing (also known as a Mantoux test) as part of our range of services to help protect our clients from this infectious disease.

About TravelVax

Certain individuals must not receive the Yellow Fever vaccination



The Yellow Fever vaccine is not recommended for certain people, including infants under 9 months of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with certain medical conditions. Our team expert can help determine if the vaccine is safe for you. In case it is not safe for you, we will provide you with a legal waiver form to allow you to enter your country of destination.

Reducing your risk of Yellow Fever while travelling to a risk area



To reduce your risk of yellow fever, you should get vaccinated at least 10 days prior to your trip. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from this potentially life-threatening disease. At TravelVAX clinics, we offer yellow fever vaccinations to anyone planning to travel to a yellow fever endemic area. Book your appointment at one of the clinics below.

Countries which require proof of vaccinations upon arrival



Certain countries with a risk of Yellow Fever may require proof of vaccination - the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis - upon arrival. Additionally, some countries with no risk of yellow fever may still require proof of vaccination for the yellow fever vaccine if you are travelling from a country with a risk of yellow fever. Our expert team members can help you figure out whether you need proof of vaccination for your itinerary, even if you are not going to a yellow fever risk area. Our expert would also provide additional tips on precautionary mosquito bite preventions to further reduce your risk.

Risk of Yellow Fever for travellers



Travellers to areas where yellow fever is present are at risk of contracting the disease if they are not vaccinated. The risk of yellow fever varies depending on the location, time of year, and activities of the traveler, and duration of the stay. Generally, the risk of yellow fever is highest in rural areas and during the rainy season, when mosquito populations are at their highest.

While there is no accurate data, according to Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, for a 2-week stay, the estimated risks for illness and for death due to YF for an unvaccinated traveler visiting an endemic area are as follows:

In West Africa, 50 per 100,000 and 10 per 100,000, respectively
In South America, 5 per 100,000 and 1 per 100,000, respectively

What is Yellow Fever?



Yellow Fever is a viral disease that is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It can cause flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, muscle pain, and nausea. In some cases, it can progress to a more severe stage, causing jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), bleeding, and organ failure. Around 10% of the cases progress to a severe case and the death rate could be 30% to 60% in these severe cases. Yellow fever is preventable through vaccination and controlling the mosquito population.
